Chinese archers vie for Asian Games squad

Guangzhou, March 9 – The National Archery Team of China kicked off the first round of its selective competition for the upcoming Asian Games at Huangcun Sports Base in Guangzhou yesterday.

Fifty-two archers take part, including Guo Dan, a member of China’s silver-winning Women’s Team at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

Archers to represent China at the Guangzhou Asian Games will be selected through two rounds of competition among teammates at the national level. The second round will be held in July.

Selected athletes will then compete in a series of national and international events, most importantly the Archery World Cup in Ogden in America this August, to warm up for November’s showdown against traditional powerhouse South Korea in Guangzhou, said Tian Yuling, Head Coach of the Chinese Archery Team.

There will be four events for Archery in the 2010 Asiad: Men’s Team, Women’s Team, Men’s Individual and Women’s Individual.

Chinese Zhang wins Women’s Archery gold

2004 Summer Olympics

Zhang represented China at the 2004 Summer Olympics. She placed 5th in the women’s individual ranking round with a 72-arrow score of 663. In the first round of elimination, she faced 60th-ranked Aurore Trayan of France. Zhang defeated Trayan 135-122 in the 18-arrow match to advance to the round of 32. In that round, she faced 28th-ranked Polish archer Iwona Marcinkiewicz. Zhang won the match 166-157 in the regulation 18 arrows, advancing to the round of 16. She then lost to 21st-ranked and eventual bronze medalist Alison Williamson of Great Britain  165-161, finishing 10th in women’s individual archery.

China has a long history of traditional archery. In the historical evolution of the process, Chinese traditional archery have played an important role, while serving as one of the gentleman Six Arts, has also been used as an important self-cultivation, strengthen self-cultivation approach respected by the people from Chinese dynasties. However, since modern times, because of changes in military technology and social change in the way of production, Chinese traditional archery has gradually declined, and even ran the risk of lost position.

Under this background, Chinese archery session, Mr. Xu Kaicai dean for many years has been dedicated to the art of traditional Chinese archery rescue and recovery. On the May 16-17, 2009 Chinese Traditional Archery Seminar hosted by Mr. Xu Kaicai,catered and sponsored by “Archery Hunters Cabin Studio”, coed by “Archery Sharon” and “Fishing and Hunting Bow-association” held in Huairou District, Beijing.
