The Poet’s Ode to Juyuanhao: William Dupree’s Verse for Yang Fuxi and the Art of Chinese Archery

We Make Bow
Passed down for generations,
our craft has been part of our culture
and also arms for our nation.

Used by ancient hunters, warriors, and nobility,
our craft—archery—is shrouded in mysticism,
our culture, and our history.

We have humbly dedicated ourselves
to this way of life,
along with its prestige and sacrifice.

Putting our craft above ourselves,
rather to have a mark on history
than to seek self-wealth.

Dedicated to improving our craft
with all the time we have left,
so our legend goes on:
from father to son,
and to others that we welcome.

We make bow.

At 70 years young, William Dupree embodies a rare fusion of artistry, craftsmanship, and martial spirit. As an acclaimed American poet recognized by the American Poetry Society and International Poetry Society, his works (The Soul of Poetry, 2009) explore life’s profound themes—love, faith, and human resilience. Yet beyond the written word, William’s quest for cultural mastery led him to an unexpected passion: Chinese traditional archery.

A lifelong martial artist and hunter, William sought weapons with soul. Disenchanted by modern compound bows, he discovered the Ju Yuan Hao Workshop and was captivated by Yang Fuxi’s exquisite craftsmanship. “No other bows surpassed his workmanship,” he reflects—a testament to his discerning eye as both artisan (he’s an accomplished visual artist) and warrior.

Though his career as an electrical technician powers data centers and assembly lines, William’s true voltage flows through creative and physical disciplines. His journey—from the streets of St. Louis to the poetry halls of Barry University, and now to the threshold of Chinese archery—mirrors the very “inspirational and motivational” spirit he writes about.

We’re honored to share his story as he prepares to wield a piece of China’s archery heritage. Through his eyes, tradition becomes a living dialogue between cultures.

South Korea is an archery superpower, having won the Olympics’ women’s recurve team championship nine times in a row.

Chinese archers struggled early on Sunday. But they took advantage of the mistakes of their opponents and raced ahead.
“The key to winning is mental construction,” Yang Xiaolei said. “The South Korean team serves as a reference point. We give it our all every time we meet them.”
Despite the drizzle, hundreds of local fans turned out to watch the finals.

“Since its inception in 2006, the Archery World Cup has changed the city’s attitude toward archery. It is no longer a niche sport,” said Guo Bei, Honorary Vice Chairman of the Asian Archery Federation.

After the tournament, the Pudong New Area authorities took the international athletes on a boat ride around the Huangpu River. They sampled local cuisine and listened to Jiangnan (the southern part of the Yangtze River’s lower reaches) music.

The World Cup will head to South Korea and Turkey next.
